Making Housing More Affordable for Homebuyers and Renters

Last year, the province introduced a 16-point plan to make housing more affordable for homebuyers and renters

We are taking action to make buying and renting a home more affordable.

For most people in my community, the largest investment they make is in their home. For many more, rent is their largest expense every month. It is important that we do what we can to ensure as many people as possible can put a roof over their heads and can afford to buy their first home.

The price of housing rose very quickly in the Great Toronto Area recently, making it difficult for first-time home buyers to enter the market.

That is why I advocated for the introduction of a foreign buyers tax to ensure my constituents are not priced out of the market by foreign speculation.

Ontario's Plan for Affordable Housing

Last spring, the Ontario government introduced a 16-point plan to make housing more affordable for homebuyers and renters. In addition to expanding rent control, the plan includes:

  • Introducing a new non-resident speculation tax of 15 per cent on the price of homes in the Greater Golden Horshoe purchased by non-Canadian citizens, non-permanent residents and non-Canadian corporations; and
  • Giving all municipalities, including Toronto, the ability to levy a vacant home property tax.
  • Expanding rent control to all private rental units, including those occupied on or after November 1, 1991.
