News from MPP Yvan Baker: Our Advocacy Leads to Decision to Keep Buttonwood in Public Hands

Yvan Baker has been advocating with our community to keep Buttonwood Hill Public School in public hands for years to come

Our Advocacy to Keep Buttonwood Public

Along with members of our community, I have been working to keep Buttonwood Hill Public School as a school in public hands for years to come and to protect the services and green space for children, students and families in our community.

Our goal has been to secure a transfer of Buttonwood Hill Public School to the Toronto Catholic District School Board as this would ensure that the property would remain in public hadns, continue to be used as a school and that the green space and services would be protected.

I have spoken with many of you by going door-to-door and attending public meetings in the community. I also presented at the meeting of the Toronto District School Board Trustees where Buttonwood's future was being decided.

We Did It!

As a result of our advocacy, the TDSB voted to refere Buttonwood Hill Public School to the Toronto Lands Corporation for sale allowing the Toronto Catholic District School Board to purchase the property.

This is a positive step for teh Buttonwood community, as it will:

  • Ensure that the property reamins in public hands for years to come and is not bought by developers;
  • Protect the services and green space for our community;
  • Maintain the Learning Jungle child care centre as a tenant;
  • Keep Leonardo Da Vinci Academy where it is until its lease expires; and
  • Relieve pressure faced by overcapactity Catholic schools in central Etobicoke.

Keep in Mind...
